“There was a baseball field here before Korea’s liberation, but it has turned into a modern stadium where important political and cultural events can be held, as well as different sports games,” said Kim Song Guk, deputy manager of Kim Il Sung Stadium.
The stadium is located at the foot of Moran Hill in Pyongyang.
It is a significant place where President Kim Il Sung had an emotional meeting with his fellow countrymen and delivered a speech on his triumphal return on October 14 1945. At that time, it was called the Pyongyang Public Playground.
It later developed into Moranbong Stadium through several renovation projects.
It was renamed Kim Il Sung Stadium on April 10 1982 in reflection of the unanimous will and desire of all the Korean people and was revamped into a comprehensive stadium that is modern in all aspects such as scale, capacity, architectural style and facilities.
Different games can be held in the stadium at the same time including football, volleyball, basketball and track and field.
Its major axis is 188m long and minor axis more than 120m. It has a total floor space of 46 000m2 with the floor area being 23 000m2 .
Its three-storey stand with 50 000 seats is covered with a 30m-wide roof.
It has all kinds of facilities for players, coaches, support staffs and spectators. All of them fully meet international standards.
The first floor is devoted to warm-up rooms and lounges for players and coaches, a clinic, equipment store, commercial partner room, press room and dope test room, and the second floor to different public service facilities, games organizing committee offices and interview rooms.
Offices of its management staff members and technical rooms for operating equipment are on the third and fourth floors.
