Korean silk is widely known throughout the world for its time-honoured history, light and durable features, beautiful patterns and soft touch.

Silk had been produced in Korea, together with hemp and ramie cloths, from a long time ago.

According to Samgukji, an old record dealing with the Three Kingdoms, people of Ancient Joson were familiar with the breeding of mulberry silkworms and Puyo people tailored gorgeous silk clothes and wore them during foreign tours.

As sericulture developed more briskly in overall regions during the Three Kingdoms along with the reclamation of more arable land and an increase in mulberry fields, the variety of silk increased more than before and its colours and patterns also developed in a diversified way.

Silk fabrics produced at the time were known even to China and Japan for their high quality and beautiful colours.

Silk production technology attained a higher level in the period of Koryo Kingdom (918-1392). For their marked increase in kinds and quality, they made inroads into the Middle and Near East to be called the “silk of Koryo”.

During the feudal Joson dynasty, famous silk production bases came into being, especially Nyongbyon and Songchon in Phyongan province, Kumya, Jongphyong, Kowon, Riwon, Hongwon, Pukchong, Tanchon, Kilju and Myongchon in Hamgyong province, Cholwon in Kangwon province and Suan in Hwanghae province. Silk produced there won fame.
