Kye Sun Hui, woman who struck world’s judo circles with wonder

Kye Sun Hui snatched a gold medal in the 48 kg category of women’s judo at the 26th Olympic Games in 1996, commanding the admiration of the world.

At that time,  foreign  newspapers and  news  agencies reported that Kye Sun Hui  from the  DPRK  defeated  a  Japanese  player,  who  was  known  as  the  worldwide  ace,  beyond expectations  at the final match,  praising  her  who made  a sudden rise from obscurity  as  a “16-year-old  unknown  ace”,  “morning  star  of  the  world  women’s  judo”,  “phenomenal woman who struck the world’s  judo  circles  with wonder”, “a player who rose on the acme of Olympic all of a sudden” and “winner of the Olympic laurels”.

She earned four consecutive wins  at  the World Judo Championships  in  2001, 2003, 2005  and  2007,  and  won  the  Asian  Judo  Championships  in  1997  and  1999,  13th Asian Games and other international games.

She also bagged a bronze medal at the 27th Olympic Games and finished runner-up at the 28th Olympic Games and World Judo Championships in 1997.

In recognition of her distinguished service,  the government conferred on her the title of  People’s  Athlete  in  1996,  the  title  of  DPRK  Labour  Hero  in  2001  and  Kim  Il  Sung  Prize in 2003.
