Public interest in industrial design is growing throughout the DPRK.
Not only professional designers but amateurs from all walks of life are presenting lots of designs.
Especially, people show close interest in the industrial design prize contest hosted by the Central Industrial Design Administration. It sponsored the contest on several occasions last year, which drew intellectuals, workers, youth, schoolchildren and other amateurs who presented their distinctive designs.
The homepage run by the administration is visited by many lovers of industrial design. They browse designs for furniture, leather goods, household appliances and other new products that are contributed to it.
Kim Kwang Gyong, a worker, has had tens of designs admitted in the contest. The designs for such articles as shoes, hairpin, belt and tea utensils have become the focus of attention of production units, as they are excellent in formative arts and of aesthetic value and fully meet technical standards.
According to an insider, junior and senior middle school students have also taken part in the prize contest. In particular, Hong Su Mi and Hong Su Hyang in Yonggwang County of South Hamgyong Province presented distinctive designs.
“I don’t think good designs are the result of special talents alone. Excellent designs favoured by the public can be produced when we devote true heart and passion to making each design a plan for everybody’s happiness and an asset of the country,” said Kim Jong Sik, an amateur living in Sangwon County of North Hwanghae Province.
