Pyongyang, January 23 (KCNA) -- Lake Chon teeming with chars is one of the eight scenic spots on Mt Paektu in the DPRK. It is a rare phenomenon that fish lives in the lake formed in a volcano crater.
Scientists of the DPRK succeeded in acclimatizing fluvial char living in the Tuman and Amnok rivers to peculiar climate and ecological environment of Lake Chon scores of years ago.
Chairman Kim Jong Il personally named it "Chonjisanchono" (Salvelinus malma m. chonjiensis) in December Juche 81 (1992).
The clear and clean Lake Chon, abundant in mineral matters and microelements, has many food resources like floating plants and underwater insects.
Chonjisanchono lays 600-700 spawn, 1 000 to the maximum, in September and October and it takes more than 100 days to hatch out from spawn. In October 2000, Chonjisanchono which is 85 cm in length and 7.7 kg in weight was witnessed in the lake.
Chonjisanchono was registered as a living monument of the country and has been preserved in the Paektusan Biosphere Sanctuary, a world biosphere sanctuary. -0-
