Korean tiger

Tiger is one of the animals the Korean people love most. Not that it is the “king” of the animal world. It is regarded as the symbol of swiftness and valour.

Since ancient times, those who are valiant and nimble have been called “generals as ferocious as a tiger” and “men as intrepid as a tiger”.

It has now under international protection as its breeding coefficient is not so high and its number dwindles day by day due to the reduction of thick forests and poaching.

It belongs to a largest fierce animal in the cat family. Its size and fur colour and length vary according to its distribution areas and it is divided into several subspecies including Korean, Siberian and Iranian tigers.

Among them, Korean tiger is bigger, nimbler and more intrepid than other subspecies and is noted for its graceful fur pattern.

It has a comparatively big build (its body length is 2.5m long, body weight is 100-306kg and its tail length is 95cm long), its back is yellowish brown and the belly and inner part of four legs are white. There are 24 black lines on its back and five on the belly and eight black patterns are seen on tail.

Unlike other subspecies, it has an outstanding black pattern of “king” in Chinese character on its forehead. This is the external feature of the Korean tiger.

Korean tiger spread widely across the country, from northern alpine areas to South Jolla Province, but now its traces are only found in northern high mountain areas.

The Korean tigers inhabiting Taehongdan County and Samjiyon City in Ryanggang Province have been nominated as natural living monument of the Korean tiger on Mt Paektu and they are under good protection.
