In Sonnae-dong, Mangyongdae District of Pyongyang, there is Sosan Fort showing the high castle building techniques of Koguryo Kingdom (277 BC-AD 668).
This fort was built between 552 and 586 when the construction of the Walled City of Pyongyang was going on. After setting Pyongyang as the capital, Koguryo built it as a subsidiary defence fort.
The fort is 2 170 metres in circumference.
Discovered at the walls and inside the fort were many red and grey roofing tile pieces, iron arrowheads and iron armour.
The fort is rectangular in shape and stones of the fort are all in a well-trimmed quadrangular pyramid shape.
Red roofing tile was often seen in the historical sites dating back to the period of Koguryo and the grey one to the period of Koryo (918-1392).
Facts prove that the fort was built in the period of Koguryo and was also used in the period of Koryo.
Sosan Fort serves as a valuable historical material in the study of the castle building techniques of Koguryo and contemporary history and culture.
