Pyongyang, February 25 (KCNA) -- The Korean nation has long cultivated five grains (rice, millet, bean, wheat and barley).
Rice takes the first place among those grains.
The nation's long history of rice cultivation was evidenced by the Namgyong and Phyodae historical remains in Honam-ri, Samsok District of Pyongyang City. Carbonized rice discovered in cultural layer of the Bronze Age of the Namgyong remains goes to clearly prove that Koreans had cultivated it from long ago.
Another important grain is bean.
Korea is the home of bean. Wild bean was found in marshlands around the mouth of the Amnok River. In the course of cultivating it, Koreans developed it into the present one.
Bean was also discovered at the Odong remains dating back to the period 5 000 years ago in Hoeryong City, North Hamgyong Province.
The Korean people have also cultivated millet from long ago.
Millet from the Jithap-ri relics in Pongsan County of North Hwanghae Province was estimated to be 7 500 years old, the oldest grain relic in the world.
The facts show that Korea took the lead in cultivating the five grains. Five grains of Korea and their cultivation method were rapidly spread to neighboring countries.
Today, the Korean people make boiled rice admixed with four other staple cereals in folk holidays like the January 15th of the lunar calendar. -0-
