Crackdown on 1919 uprising a good reminder of Japan's wrongdoings

Japan militarily occupied Korea early in the past century and enforced unprecedented terrorism and rule of bayonets. It inflamed the anti-Japanese sentiment of the Koreans and finally gave rise to the nationwide resistance against them.

With the anti-Japanese demonstration staged in Pyongyang on March 1 1919 as a signal fire, the uprising spread rapidly throughout the country and even to Korean communities in foreign regions including China’s Manchuria and Shanghai, Russia’s Primorsky, the US’ Hawaii, thereby expanding and developing into an all-nation patriotic resistance.

Much upset by the fighting spirit of the Korean people, Japan immediately mobilized large numbers of military and policemen and committed fully armed garrison forces to putting down the uprising. The Japanese troops stationing in Korea joined in the repression of the revolt and elite forces were sent as reinforcements from the mainland. Even the Japanese residents in Korea brutally killed Koreans by wielding lethal weapons.

“The Japanese military policemen run amuck to mount hideously harsh crackdown on protesters. Their ferocity is indescribable. They stabbed Koreans to death with bayonets and hanged them,” said Japanese scholar Shinobu.

This is the tip of the iceberg showing the wrongdoings committed by the Japanese imperialists against the Korean nation during their military rule spanning decades. All sorts of brutalities perpetrated by them in Korea are unheard-of heinous crimes aimed at completely obliterating the Korean nation.

This notwithstanding, Japan is still making desperate attempt to evade responsibility, far from making soul-searching, as it whitewashes heinous unethical crimes it committed against the Korean people in the past.

The hot blood of March 1 shed by the Korean people during the uprising has not yet cooled down.
