April 9 was the 28th anniversary of Kim Jong Il’s election as chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK.
The 1990s were hard times for the country.
The imperialists got more pronounced in their moves to stifle the DPRK, taking advantage of the collapse of socialism in some countries. Moreover, consecutive natural disasters brought severe difficulties to the national economy.
At that time, Chairman Kim Jong Il administered original Songun politics to lead socialist construction to victory.
Songun politics is a political mode of safeguarding the country by building the Korean People’s Army into invincible forces, strengthening the motive force of the revolution with the People’s Army as the core and model and advancing socialist construction as a whole with it as the pillar of the revolution.
Having put forward the People’s Army not only as the driving force of national defence but also as the main force in economic construction for the country’s prosperity and improvement of the people’s living standards, the Chairman made a breakthrough in building a powerful country by effecting a fresh upsurge in economic construction.
At a time when the world thought that the existence of the DPRK itself was a miracle, it achieved eye-opening successes one after another such as successive launches of artificial earth satellites, establishment of the Juche-based iron-making system and development of the cutting-edge CNC technology.
History definitely proved the outstanding personality of Chairman Kim Jong Il as a great statesman, extraordinary military strategist and leader of the people.
That is why the Korean people invariably elected him as chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission and held him in high esteem as the eternal chairman of the NDC after he passed away.
Today, the exploits performed by the Chairman are precious assets in the Korean people’s socialist cause and they are striving to build a powerful socialist country as he had desired.
