Korean silk has been widely known across the world for its lightness, durability, beautiful pattern and softness to the touch.
From olden times, the Koreans raised three-moult silkworm unlike other countries and weaved silk cloth with its cocoon thread.
Old documents record that the Korean silkworm moulted three times.
The three-moult silkworm grew quickly and was not easily affected by diseases for its strong viability. Especially, its cocoon thread was used in weaving soft and light silk fabrics, which were easily dyed and looked very beautiful.
Some ancient silk fabrics were unearthed in ancient tombs in the area around Rangnang District, Pyongyang, and it proved that they were made from very thin cocoon thread of three-moult silkworms.
In the period of Koryo dynasty, the technique of producing silk fabrics was further developed and their kinds increased. For their superior quality, they were exported not only to the neighbouring countries but to the Middle and Near Eastern countries, winning its fame as “Koryo silk”.
The unique silk fabrics showcase the wisdom and talents of the Korean nation.
