Pyongyang, May 7 (KCNA) -- Various kinds of migratory birds are living in group in the DPRK as there are different types of wetlands.
In an interview with KCNA on the occasion of World Migratory Birds Day (May 8), Ho Myong Hyok, an official of the Ministry of Land and Environment Protection, said:
The protection of migratory birds in our country has been conducted on a nationwide scale.
The wetland issue was supplemented in the Nature Reserve Law of the DPRK in September last year to intensify the protection of migratory birds.
On the basis of survey of dozens of wetlands including the Mundok Migratory Bird Reserve, the ministry has established a system for designating the migratory bird reserves and protecting them. Meanwhile, various education activities are conducted to stress the importance of protecting the migratory birds.
In recent years, it has also strengthened the international cooperation for migratory bird protection. Experts at home and those from Germany, New Zealand and the International Union for Conservation of Nature made a joint survey in major wetlands along the east and west coasts of the DPRK to study the ecological activities of migratory birds and take steps for protecting them.
The DPRK acceded to the Ramsar Convention and the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP), and its Mundok and Rason migratory bird reserves were registered as the Ramsar Site and Mundok and Kumya migratory bird reserves as the Network Site of the EAAF (East Asian-Australasian Flyway). -0-
