The Seventh Congress of the Socialist Women's Union of Korea was held in Pyongyang on June 20-21.

The congress comprehensively analyzed and reviewed the women's union work during the period under review and discussed tasks and practical ways for making the union fulfil its mission and duty as the revolutionary women's organization in the campaign for winning a new great victory in socialist construction.

It was attended by delegates elected by the women's union organizations at all levels.

Present there as observers were officials of the Party, administrative and armed forces organs.

The platform was taken by Ri Il Hwan, member of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, Ri Tu Song, department director of the Central Committee of the WPK, executive members of the Central Committee of the SWUK, chairwomen of the provincial women's union committees, officials in charge of the women's union work at the armed forces organs, exemplary officials and hard-core members of the women's union organizations and officials concerned.

The congress elected its presidium and secretariat.

It approved the following agenda items:

1. Review of the work of the Central Committee of the SWUK

2. Review of the work of the Central Inspection Commission of the SWUK

3. On revising the rules of the SWUK

4. Election of the central leadership body of the SWUK

At the congress, Ri Il Hwan read out Let the Women’s Union Become a Powerful Unit in Propelling the Advance and Development of Our Style of Socialism, the important letter Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the WPK and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK, sent to the participants in the Seventh SWUK Congress.

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un in his letter warmly congratulated the congress on behalf of the Central Committee of the Party, expressing his expectation that the congress held just after the Third Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee of the WPK would mark a turning point in awakening the members of the women's union once again to the position and duty of the Korean women's movement which plays an important part in the revolution and preparing them to be revolutionaries loyal to the Party and steadfast patriots.

Saying that the noble mental world and indomitable struggle of the Korean women including women’s union members who entrust their destiny to the WPK and make devoted efforts to add victory and glory to the socialist country are a source of great pride of our Party and people, Kim Jong Un appreciated the spectacular feats that the women's union had performed before the country, people and rising generations with ardent patriotism over the past five years.

Calling upon the women's union to significantly improve its fighting efficiency in the revolutionary advance to usher in a new period of a great upsurge and turn in socialist construction and inject vitality into the revolution and dynamically propel the all-people general advance by arousing all the members of the union to the campaign for implementing the important decisions made at the Party congress and by the Party Central Committee, he set forth the tasks facing the women's union organizations at present and ways for carrying them out.

Jang Chun Sil, chairwoman of the Central Committee of the SWUK, delivered a report on the first agenda item "Review of the work of the Central Committee of the SWUK".

She said that the convention of the Seventh Congress of the SWUK on the journey of ushering in the new era of dynamic and advance along the path of advance indicated by the Eighth Congress of the WPK is associated with the trust and expectation of the Party Central Committee that the women's union would successfully fulfil its role as transmission belts and a reliable assistant to the Party by carrying forward the spirit of the heroic struggle displayed by the women of the preceding generations.

The General Secretary sent a historic letter to the participants in the sixth congress of the women's union five years ago to provide a great immortal programme for developing the women's union work in conformity with the requirements of the law governing the development of the Korean revolution and the Juche-oriented women's movement, she said.

She referred to the fact that he led the women’s union to wage an intensive campaign to consolidate the organizations so that the women's union organizations at all levels were developed into militant organizations strong in the sense of organization and discipline.

She said that the achievements made in the women's union work to implement the tasks set forth at the Seventh Congress of the Party are the fruition of the great leadership provided by the General Secretary who had led the women's union to remain intensely loyal to the cause of the Party.

She said that the women's union faces an honourable duty to fully display its militant might as a mass political organization in the general advance for implementing the fighting programme set forth at the Eighth Congress of the Party.

She called upon the women's union organizations at all levels to go all out to bring about a fundamental change in the work of the women's union true to the decisions made at the Party Congress.

She appealed to all the union members to work hard for a fresh victory of the socialist cause, closely rallied around General Secretary Kim Jong Un.

Speeches were made on the first agenda item.

The speakers analyzed and reviewed achievements and experience gained in the union work in the period under review as well as mistakes and their causes.

They referred to the achievements and experience they gained as they conducted ideological education effectively in line with the specific features of their units and mentality of the masses and enhanced the efficiency of the union organizations amid the fierce campaign to create model units and socialist emulation drive.

They expressed their resolve to redouble their efforts with the new determination and preparedness to do the union work as guided by the Party's ideas and intentions.

The congress heard a report on the second agenda item "Review of the work of the Central Inspection Commission of the SWUK", followed by speeches. A resolution was adopted with unanimous approval.

The congress discussed the third agenda item "On revising the rules of the SWUK".

There was a report on revising the rules of the SWUK that had been modified and supplemented as required by the developing revolution and on the principle of building the women's union, and a resolution was adopted with the unanimous approval of the delegates.

The congress discussed the fourth agenda item "Election of the central leadership body of the SWUK".

It elected the Central Committee of the SWUK.

All the nominees were elected members and alternate members of the Central Committee of the SWUK with the unanimous approval of the delegates.

Then there was the First Plenary Meeting of the Seventh Central Committee of the SWUK.

Ri Il Hwan announced the result of the plenary meeting.

The Executive Committee of the Central Committee of the SWUK was elected.

Kim Jong Sun was elected chairwoman of the Central Committee of the SWUK and Cha Hyon Ok, Ri Hyang Suk, Son Myong Ae and Ri Hae Im were elected vice-chairwomen.

The Organizing Committee of the Central Committee of the SWUK was formed.

The chairwoman, vice-chairwomen and members of the Central Inspection Commission of the SWUK were elected.

Department directors of the Central Committee of the SWUK were appointed.

The congress elected the committee for drafting the resolution of the congress with newly-elected members of the seventh central leadership body of the SWUK, and the committee comprehensively examined the draft resolution on the first agenda item.

A resolution on the first agenda item, which had been supplemented with the contents of the work and creative and constructive opinions of the delegates for thoroughly carrying out the important tasks set forth in the letter of the General Secretary, was adopted with unanimous approval at the congress.
