Mutated virus δ is rapidly spreading all over the world.
Known as the most contagious of all mutated viruses so far detected, it is now sweeping across over 90 countries and regions.
The WHO has already warned that the virus may become dominant all over the globe in the latter half of the year.
Most of the newly registered COVID-19 cases in the UK are infected with this mutated virus. It has reportedly sparked a new wave of the pandemic, sweeping across the country in a short time.
More than 60 percent of the recently developed COVID-19 cases in Lisbon, Portugal, have been confirmed to be infected with this virus strain.
The Portuguese authorities banned travel to and from the city as a countermeasure.
The German health authorities said that though the proportion of δ mutated virus infection is only 6 percent in the country at the moment, it is expected to be a dominant virus in autumn at the latest.
In France, 9-10 percent of the daily COVID-19 infected cases are reportedly those who contracted this virus variety.
The European disease control centre expressed concern over the spread of this virus, saying it is highly likely to be widespread during summer and 90 percent of new infections in the EU member nations in late August might be from this virus strain.
Mutated virus δ has been identified in almost all states of the US.
American experts warned that in view of the rate of its spread the mutated virus might take up a dominant position not in a few months, but in a few weeks. In actuality, it reportedly took less than two weeks for the number of those infected with this virus to double.
Mutated virus δ infected cases were discovered in Hawaii for the first time, one of whom had never travelled to other places.
Health experts say it is a matter of time when the mutated virus would spread all over the world.
