Pyongyang, September 1 (KCNA) -- The Moranbong Theater is located on picturesque Moran Hill in Pyongyang, the capital city of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The theatre with Korean-style tiled roofs matches well to the scenery of the hill.

It was built in Juche 35 (1946).

After Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule, President Kim Il Sung climbed the hill and chose a site for the theatre to make the Korean people, who had been subjected to national contempt and suppression by the Japanese imperialists for many years, lead a happy cultural and emotional life. And he named it "Moranbong Theatre".

The theater is a witness of the history telling stories about the development of the DPRK.

At the theatre, the President organized and guided 200-odd occasions of meetings, art performances and external affairs including the First Session of the Supreme People's Assembly and a national meeting of bumper croppers. And a national flag-raising ceremony in celebration of the founding of the DPRK was solemnly held in front of the theatre.

Chairman Kim Jong Il visited the Moranbong Theatre in April Juche 86 (1997) and gave a precious instruction on sprucing up it, a historic building associated with the immortal revolutionary activities of the President.

Later, he indicated the orientation and ways for remodeling the theatre on the highest level in conformity with the requirements of the new century. Under his wise guidance, the theatre was wonderfully rebuilt as a people's palace of culture in November 2005.

Nowadays, people are visiting the theatre to see performances given by the National Symphony Orchestra and other art troupes. -0-
