The archaeological remains in Taehyon-dong are cave relics belonging to the middle term of the Paleolithic era unearthed in Taehyon-dong, Ryokpho District of the capital city Pyongyang.
Fossil human bones and mammals were unearthed from the sedimentary layer in the cave.
Dr. Kim Chun Jong, Section Chief of the Archaeological Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences says:
"Ryokpho man, a fossil Paleolithic man, was discovered in the relics of Taehyon-dong for the first time in Korea. The frontal, parietal and temporal bones were known as fossil remains of the Ryokpho man, of whom the left parietal bone was almost sound. The fossil remains of the Ryokpho man are recognized to be those of a 7- to 8-year-old child. The fossil remains of the Ryokpho man show the primitive characteristics that can be found only among the ape-men, the characteristics peculiar to a Paleolithic man alone and the developed characteristics that can be found among the neolithic men. This clearly proves that the Ryokpho man belongs to the Paleolithic man in the process of development of human evolution. The discovery of Ryokpho man, a fossil Paleolithic man, in the remains of Taehyon-dong shows well that Korea is one of the human cradles and that the process of development of human evolution has continued in the Taedong Basin in particular."
28 species of fossil mammals were identified. Among them are over 10 extinct species including the Taehyon horse, beaver, rhinoceros, hairy rhinoceros, the Taehyon rodent and moose.
The archaeological remains unearthed in Taehyon-dong are of great significance in studying the life of the Paleolithic men and fauna in the middle term of the Paleolithic age of Korea.
