New streets give Pyongyang a facelift

Over the past ten years, new streets have sprung up in succession in Pyongyang, providing citizens with spectacular scenery and homes of happiness.

After Changjon Street was built splendidly in 2012, Unha Scientists Street, Wisong Scientists Dwelling District, Mirae Scientists Street and others were erected magnificently one by one each year.

Mirae Scientists Street built along the picturesque Taedong riverside embraces large blocks of high-rise apartment houses for thousands of families in the form of tower and bundle, lots of public buildings like the Changgwang Shop, nursery, kindergarten and school, commercial, public catering and welfare service networks, resting places and sports parks.

In particular, the 53-storey skyscraper, which is novel and distinctive in architectural form, forming a graceful curve in external design, is a symbol of the street. For the building of its framework, builders reportedly introduced original and bold construction methods as each floor required a special building method and different amount of raw materials.

The construction of Ryomyong Street was successfully completed in April 2017 to mark the 105th birth anniversary of President Kim Il Sung.

The project was 1.5 times larger than that of Mirae Scientists Street in scale as it included the construction of dozens of multi-storey and high-rise apartment houses for over 4 800 families and over 40 public buildings like nursery and kindergarten and renovation of over 70 blocks of dwelling houses and public buildings in an area of some 90 hectares.

Builders turned out for the construction to finish the project in a matter of a year since its ground-breaking, thus building a fairyland street on a par with a city while waging the huge rehabilitation campaign in the northern areas of North Hamgyong Province.

The construction of a 70-storey apartment house was the most uphill task in the construction project of the street as it is over 200 metres high with a total floor space of over 120 000 square metres. But the builders shortened the time of concrete work for one floor from 36 hours to 24 and again to 12 to complete the framework construction in 74 days. They also finished the outdoor tile fixing over some 43 000-square-metre walls, an area which is larger than that of several football grounds put together, in a matter of 13 days.

Energy-saving and green architecture technologies were widely introduced into the construction project to make effective use of natural energy sources like geotherm and the street was landscaped in an original fashion.

Housing projects have dynamically been pushed forward in the Songsin-Songhwa area and Pothong riverside area this year again, with stylish streets having already taken shape.
