The Mayang Musk Deer is a living monument in the area of the Mayang Workers' District, Musan County, North Hamgyong Province of Korea.
It is 75 to 95 centimetres long and 8.5 to 10 kilograms heavy. Both male and female have no antler. The male has long canine that came out of labium and hung down.
Male and Female
The male has a musk gland around its belly button. A long hair-bundle is seen on the outside with musk bag.
The Mayang Musk Deer ranges a forest in search of food in the morning and evening. It lives on Musci, mushroom, soft grass, sprout and various kinds of wild fruits.
It is a highly sensitive and shy animal. If it feels even a little it is in danger, the musk deer immediately runs off and hides itself behind a rock.
Habitat of the Mayang Musk Deer
The habitat of the Mayang Musk Deer is a mountainous region over 1,300 metres above the sea level. It is thick with moss, mushroom, various kinds of grass, shrubs and needle-leaf trees, which provides favourable conditions for food and shelter.
The Mayang Musk Deer which gives us musk, a precious material for traditional Korean medicines, has been designated as a living monument and is protected and multiplied in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
