Pyongyang, February 12 (KCNA) -- January 15th of lunar calendar is one of the traditional folk holidays of the Korean people.
The celebration begins on the eve when people hang various crop ears up a pole and hope for good crops in the new year, with children dancing and singing around it. Early on the eve adults spread manure on fields, which shows that the diligent Korean people considered farming as the mainstay of their life.
On the holiday, families enjoy special food like five-grain staple, glutinous rice mixed with sugar, dates, chestnuts, pine-nuts and sesame oil and side dishes made of dried greens, and share them with relatives and neighbors.
Kite-flying, pinwheel, yut, tug of war and other folk games add to the festive mood.
The celebration culminates in viewing the first full moon of the year. Looking up to the full moon, people hope their wishes come true.
The customs of celebrating January 15th of lunar calendar and welcoming the full moon were registered as national intangible cultural heritages in Juche 103 (2014). -0-
