Pyongyang, April 12 (KCNA) -- Hundreds of hectares of forests and facilities in the Mt Kumgang area in Kangwon Province of the DPRK were damaged by fire.

A forest fire broke out on a hill near the Kuryong Pool of Mt Kumgang and the Kosong Port Golf Course in Onjong-ri, Kosong County at about 15:20 on April 9. The fire was rapidly spread by a strong wind to adjoining forests and facilities.

Right after its outbreak all fire-fighting equipment and manpower available were mobilized to extinguish the fire.

The Cabinet and the State Emergency Disaster Committee took emergency measures to immediately extinguish the forest fire and rehabilitate the affected area.

Given the ever-changing wind direction, a firebreak was created to prevent its spread and an operation was launched to put it out.

The forest fire was finally put out at about 11:20 on April 10 and surveillance for preventing its recurrence is underway.

The field of land and environment protection and all institutions and units were ordered to take due measures for establishing a stricter system for monitoring and notifying forest fires and mobilizing the public to prevent it. -0-
