The Maejon Farm of Phyongwon County is located in a mountainous area by the sea.
It has very few farm fields, most of which are coastal stretches of tideland-turned rice field.
On top of that, it suffered a severe shortage of irrigation water in the farming season.
“It was a pressing task for us to solve the water problem for increased cereal production. We racked our brains to solve the problem and finally found an answer to it while studying the works of President Kim Il Sung,” said the chairwoman of the farm management board.
The President had already instructed that the west coastal farms should address the water shortage by doing the irrigation projects well. His works actually helped her broaden her horizons.
She looked around the farm from a new angle.
As it is at the end of the Kaechon-Lake Thaesong Waterway, the farm could store water flowing into the West Sea of Korea in the leisure seasons for farmers in a reservoir and use it for farming, she thought.
By adding rain and snow water to it, it seemed possible for the farm to solve the water problem, the key issue for farming, by itself.
Her suggestion won immediate support and sympathy from the farmers.
The farm also makes the most of the mountains and sea to develop fruit farming and fisheries in a far-sighted way.
It built several fishing boats to do offshore fish farming and culture.
Every year it catches a large quantity of fishes and supply them to the farmers. It also sells them to make profits and purchase farming materials.
And it picks apples, pears, plums and peaches in the dozens-of-hectare orchards built on the surrounding hills and supplies them to the nursery and kindergarten children and farmers.
On the basis of this experience, the farm has continued to launch other projects to enrich the farmers’ lives in many ways.
