The skin disease prevention department of Pyongyang Municipal People’s Hospital No. 2 has invented a method of treating shingles with traditional Koryo therapy and introduced it in clinical practice to gain good results.
Shingles is a vesicular viral infection in which herpes zoster viruses cause small blisters to appear in bands over the skin along the peripheral nervous system.
The disease causes such symptoms as local itches and pains, neuralgia, acroesthesia, motor neuroparalysis and autonomic neuropathy symptoms, plaguing the patient physically and mentally.
Particularly, aged persons undergo much suffering due to the sequelae of the disease.
The disease usually lasts for two or three weeks and long neuralgia or a complication of meningitis, keratitis and so on may ensue.
“Until now a large quantity of antibiotics, antiviral agents, ointment, ozone and so on have been used to treat shingles but it was difficult to expect complete curative effectiveness and thus it has been recognized as one of obstinate skin diseases,” said Ri Kwang Il, doctor of the department.
He added that they established a method of easily curing the disease with a therapy that uses hypodermic needle, cupping and indirect moxibustion instead of relying only on drug therapy like in the past and confirmed the method’s curative effectiveness through long clinical introduction.
According to him, if the method is applied to the disease within one week after its outbreak, it is cured completely without causing sequelae.
“I was in agony after hearing that the disease is an obstinate one. When the doctors proposed treating it with traditional Koryo therapy I doubted that the therapy really could do as I knew that even modern medicine fails to. But I could not repress my surprise when my skin got well within some days after starting to get the treatment,” said an in-patient.
The time of the treatment is short and there is almost no relapse after treatment. And as the treatment operation is simple with no need to use drugs or complicated means, families can do it without the help of a professional doctor. So it attracts the attention of relevant patients.
