"As we can expect no beautiful flower or ripe fruit on dry soil, so we can find no pleasure of life without emotion and optimism," said Ham Chun Ok, weaver at the Pyongyang Kim Jong Suk Textile Mill.

It is said that every day passes with songs at the textile mill.

Every morning, impressive and appealing motivational activities conducted by members of the mobile artistic motivational team arouse its employees to labour feats and the news about feats performed by labour innovators are publicized along with songs from a loudspeaker van to encourage their morale.

And mass-based cultural and artistic activities are conducted briskly in every workplace. Therefore, stirring songs resound everywhere and everyone lives optimistically while reciting poems and playing musical instruments at breaks or on holidays.

Shortly ago, a new modern hall of culture has been built to add pleasure to its workers.

At the two-storey building with a total floor space of thousands of square metres, merry singing of girl workers and guitar and accordion sounds reverberate continuously.

According to their cultural attainments and talents, workers give full play to their skills in artistic group rooms for various artistic activities like vocal music, instrumental music, narrative technique and dance.

They are all innovators at production sites and good artistes on stages.

“It is no exaggeration to say that the mill is enveloped in songs,” said An Hyok Chol, director of the hall.

“When we arrive at the mill in the morning, our dear workplace welcomes us, the nice hall of culture calls us after a day’s work and workers’ hostel built like a palace await us after work. So, we sing songs continuously,” said Ri Jong Hwa, worker at the youth spinning workshop of the general spinning workshop.

She added that the hostel, called the workers’ palace, is filled with laughter and the hall of culture with songs and therefore our life itself turns into poems and songs.

It is a habit of everyone at the mill, from officials to workers, to create literary works.

Thus, they presented a collection of works “Songs resounding through the country in February” to General Secretary Kim Jong Un in 2020 and produced another one “Opening the record book” in December that year.

According to An Hyok Chol, all the works produced by workers reflect their worthwhile working life and cultural and leisure activities with words and melodies. Such works are so truthful and simple that they touch the heartstrings of the masses.

They were highly appreciated at the Sixth April Spring People’s Art Festival and came first in different national artistic contests.
