On November 26, the election of basic public officials was held in the Taiwanese region including heads of counties and municipalities, assemblymen and officials of townships and villages.
According to statistics released by the Taiwanese authorities, the Chinese Nationalist Party won 13 seats, the Democratic Progressive Party five seats, the People’s Party one seat and non-factional group two seats among 21 counties and municipalities.
As to the crushing defeat of the Democratic Progressive Party in the election, Cai Yingwen, leader of the Taiwanese authorities, announced he would resign from his post as chairman of the party.
The recent election results reflected the main public sentiment on the island which pursues peace and stability and aspires after a happy life, a spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office of China said, adding that China would continue to promote the peaceful development of the cross-Straits relations, improve the public welfare of cross-Straits compatriots, reject the “independence of Taiwan” and the interference of outside forces, and shape a bright future of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
