The Anguk Temple in Ponghak-dong, Phyongsong City, South Phyongan Province, is one of the historical relics showing the long history and brilliant culture of the Korean nation.
It was completed after over 20 years of construction in the period of Koguryo (277 BC-AD 668), and it is one of the oldest temples remaining in Korea.
According to a record, it was a very large temple consisting of dozens of buildings originally.
Now there remain the Taeung Hall, the main building of the temple, the Thaephyong Pavilion, the Juphil Pavilion, a dormitory for Buddhist monks, a nine-storey pagoda and a monument.
The Taeung Hall is a two-storey building and part of the valuable cultural heritage which is excellent in architecture and significant in terms of science and architectural structure.
The Thaephyong Pavilion standing opposite the Taeung Hall with a yard between them is a one-storey building with a gable roof and double eaves. It is 19.25m long at the façade and 6.8m wide at the side.
There stands a nine-storey pagoda in front of the pavilion.
The pagoda, which seems to have been built later than the middle period of Koryo(918-1392), testifies to the fact that the temple was managed during the Koryo dynasty and serves as a valuable legacy in the study of stone pagoda-construction techniques and sculptural art in those days.
The Anguksa gingko tree, a natural monument, grows near the pagoda.
The tree is one of the oldest trees in Korea.
It adds to the scenic beauty of the temple.
