Pyongyang, February 2 (KCNA) -- February 2 is World Wetland Day.
The DPRK has a large area of wetlands such as rivers and artificial lakes. So, different kinds of water birds inhabit the country with huge numbers in different seasons, and peculiar plants, communities and animal species depending on wetlands are predominantly distributed.
In the country, such activities have been conducted as forest creation, survey and study of wetland ecosystem, establishment and management of wetland reserve and rational use of wetland resources.
The project for use and management of wetlands is reflected in the state policy and carried out rationally according to the national strategy.
Laws on protection of environment and nature reserve were amended and supplemented to ensure that relevant sectors fully discharge their responsibility for the protection and management of wetlands.
Researches are going on to reevaluate the reality of the reserves and increase them.
Last year, scientists of the Zoology Research Institute and the Biodiversity Institute of the State Academy of Sciences made a survey of more than 30 wetlands and migratory bird reserves including the Mundok Migratory Bird (Wetland) Reserve and the Kumya Migratory Bird (Wetland) Reserve.
The survey data became a guarantee for making a comprehensive assessment of the distribution of plant and animal species and taking national measures to improve the maintenance and management of reserves.
Meanwhile, a picture album introducing the Kumya Migratory Bird (Wetland) Reserve was published to contribute to the education in wetland.
The DPRK acceded to the Wetland Convention in May Juche 107 (2018). -0-
