Instead of trying to justify its decision on discharging radioactive-contaminated water into the sea, Japan should work out and prove a dumping plan other than discharging into the sea and accept strict international supervision so that the international community would not suffer any unexpected hazards, said a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry in a press conference on March 27.
China has expressed concern on several occasions over Japan’s unilateral decision on dumping nuclear waste water from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant into the sea, he noted.
Though Japan tries to justify itself saying purified wastewater is harmless, facts show that nuclear-contaminated water contains over 60 kinds of radioactive nuclides, many of which cannot be treated with existing technologies, he asserted.
The dumping process may last for 30 years or more and the maturity and efficiency of the multi-nuclide elimination technology has never been evaluated nor verified by a third party, he said.
Referring to some data released by Japan, he said that since they were presented by the Tokyo electric power company which is notorious for distorting and fabricating information, Japan’s “theory on the safety of the nuclear-contaminated water” is far from convincing to the international community.
He stressed that Japan should not dump the wastewater into the sea until it goes through successful negotiations and reaches an agreement with interested sides like neighbouring countries and relevant international organizations.
