Pinwheelturning is a folk game enjoyed by children. The toy is made of paper or piecesof split bamboo or wood and children play with it, making it turn round by wind.
It isa game enjoyed by Korean children from of old.
Koreanancestors had a custom of hanging on the tops of long poles rice straw bundles andears of rice, barley, foxtail millet, sorghum, soybean and red bean and standingthe poles by stables or gates just ahead of Jongwoldaeborum(the 15th day of the first month by the lunar calendar).
Atthat time, children made such pinwheels and fixed them on the poles hung with theears to turn round by wind.
They tiethe toys to high spots or run forward with the toys in their hands so that theyturn round as fast as possible or compete with each other to see whose pinwheelrises higher than others’.
Theway to make the toy rise high is to wind a cord around the toy’s spindle made ofa wood or bamboo strip and unwind the cord as fast as possible so that it canfly up.
Thereare various other ways to play with the toy.
It isoften made by clipping paper or cutting wood.
When itis made of wood or bamboo, both ends of its blades are trimmed to be thin tofly well.
Whenit is made of paper, a square piece of paper is glued on either end of a stick inthe opposite direction so that the stick can turn round the spindle or a sheetof paper is cut toward the centre from four corners and their ends are bent andfixed on the centre round the spindle.
Sucha pinwheel is an interesting toy designed to turn well by wind.
Thegame is good for the physical training of children as they competitively run toturn the toy by wind and for developing their faculty of thinking about flight.For example, they consider the direction and speed of the wind in order to turnthe toy fast or fly it high.
