Lecturers and researchers of Kim Il Sung University made it possible to produce high-grade manganese concentrate by using low-grade wad.
While iron, the king of industry, holds a large proportion in consolidating the foundation of the self-supporting economy, manganese is one of the most important raw materials indispensable for iron and steel production.
The lecturers and researchers of the university concentrated their energies on research by setting themselves the goal of obtaining manganese concentrate from low-grade wad that had been discarded previously.
They studied and analyzed lots of technical data related to the production of manganese concentrate and racked their brains to find a rational way to suit the actual conditions. In that course they conceived an idea of obtaining high-grade manganese concentrate from low-grade wad. As they repeated tests many times, they solved technical problems including the establishment of the optimum leaching conditions and the way to raise the concentrate grade, thus developing a new method of producing manganese concentrate with low-grade wad.
The application of the new method to iron production proved to be of great economic value.
Pyongyang University of Mechanical Engineering also established a new technology helpful to putting the production of metallic materials on a Juche basis.
Castings made of spherical graphite cast iron are used in the machine-building industry for the manufacture of various kinds of parts for their good mechanical properties and castability.
The research group of the university searched for a new method of producing spherical graphite cast iron using a silicon alloy.
On the basis of an in-depth study and analysis of a lot of technical data, they found a clue for spheroidizing cast iron in an original way and conducted many rounds of tests in contact with the relevant workshop.
They finally succeeded in producing spherical graphite cast iron with an elongation coefficient and yield point higher than those of previous ones.
According to researchers, various kinds of parts made of this spherical graphite cast iron have greatly improved the quality of products.
