Crimes of American Soldiers in Japan: Inevitable Outcome of Japan’s Policy of Submission To U.S.

Date: 04/12/2023 | Source: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EN) | Read original version at source

Crimes of all hues are being committed one after another by the U.S. soldiers stationed in Japan.

American soldiers in Okinawa Prefecture were reportedly taken into custody by police for reckless drunk driving in April and June.

And a drunken American soldier was arrested in October for breaking a window and trespassing on a civilian house.

In November, a U.S. marine committed a violent crime of assailing a 76-year-old woman in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

These crimes are just the tip of the iceberg.

Okinawa Prefecture, Kanagawa Prefecture, Tokyo Province and Yamaguchi Prefecture are witnessing crimes almost every day, for they are the places where the U.S. military bases are situated.

Particularly, Okinawa where 70% of all U.S. military establishments in Japan are crammed is turning into a habitat and breeding place of crimes by the U.S. army in Japan.

Due to this, the residents of this area have suffered endless torment and misery from the 80-year-long aggressive war exercises of and all sorts of crimes by the U.S. army.

The gang rape of a Japanese girl by three U.S. soldiers in September 1995 sparked the anti-U.S. sentiments among residents of Okinawa. And even until today, demonstrations and rallies are continued by these residents in strong protest of illegal and inhumane crimes perpetrated by the U.S. army.

Despite the strong protests and denunciation of the Japanese people, however, the crimes committed by the U.S. army continue to prevail, far from being eradicated. With regard to this, a Japanese report carried a serial article lamenting the humiliating attitude of the current authorities submitting to the U.S. The article said that whenever a report on a crime committed by the U.S. army stationed in Japan is released, the handling of these culprits is unknowable and this is attributable to the agreements on surrendering jurisdiction rights and the transferring of new recruits which were made behind closed doors between high-ranking officials of the U.S. and Japan 70 years ago from now.

The article deplored the uncertainty on when the unequal relations between Japan and the U.S. could be set right.

The prevalence of violent crimes by the U.S. army in Japan is, in all aspects, an inevitable outcome of the policy of submission to the U.S. pursued by the Japanese authorities.
