Kim Chol Hwan, a wrestlerwho grew up under the care of the Workers’ Party of Korea, was a famous sportsmanwho became the first twice world wrestling champion of the DPRK by winning thefirst place in the 48kg category events of the 22nd and 23rd World FreestyleWrestling Championships.
The country highlyappreciated his successes and feats in the international arena and put him forwardas the first Labour Hero of the sports circle of the DPRK together with theworld table-tennis queen Pak Yong Sun.
Kim started wrestling atSongyo District Extracurricular Juvenile Sports School in his teens and tookthe first place in the 36kg freestyle wrestling event of the Asian juvenilewrestling championship held in Iraq in October Juche 66(1977).
Later, he took the firstplace at international games held in August Juche 70(1981) and March thefollowing year, fully demonstrating his physical and technical abilities.
Though he had some failuresand frustrations in his playing career, Kim braced himself up with confidencein victory and high ambition and lifted the trophy at the 22nd World FreestyleWrestling Championships. Thus, he became the first world wrestling champion inthe country.
He won the 48kg category titleat the 23rd World Freestyle Wrestling Championships again and brought greatpleasure to the country.
In Juche 74(1985), he was awardedthe title of Labour Hero, the highest honourfor DPRK citizens.
Kim Chol Hwan, who lived alife of loyalty and patriotism, was buried in the Patriotic Martyrs Cemetery.
