Lake Kwang, one of the largest natural lakes in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, is located between Hamju and Jongphyong counties of South Hamgyong Province.
At present, Jongphyong County is conserving the lake to protect its ecological environment whereby it brings huge profits to its economic development and enhancement of the locals’ living standards.
Based on the yearly goal for its improvement, it dug up 35 000 cubic metres of mud from the lakebed last year and reinforced the bank in several kilometres of dangerous section to prevent it from any flood damage, and improved the surrounding environment in harmony with the lakeside.
It also built a 20-ton dredger for its normal conservation.
As a result, the farms around the lake are provided with sufficient water even in the dry season.
The county produces quality organic compound fertilizer with the mud containing various microelements and applies it to low-yield fields to turn them into fertile ones.
The deep water of the lake serves as a foundation for doing cage-net fish farming on a large scale, and water plants with rich protein content are used as feed of fish in the lake, and duck and other domestic animals, with the result that the county is now in a position to supply its residents with fish, meat and eggs on a regular basis.
