Yun Jong Su, 68, and Pak Sun Hui, 67, a couple of badminton fans, live in Neighbourhood Unit No. 22, Hungbu-dong, Moranbong District in Pyongyang Municipality.
The elderly couple are popular among neighbours and also well-known across the city for their high badminton skills.
They have taken the first and second places several times since they participated in the annual tournament of older people.
Yun and Pak have taken part in all events of the tournament, such as singles, doubles and mixed doubles, in which they performed excellent technical movements, winning great admiration of spectators.
They have several diplomas and medals under their belts. But they have no professional careers.
After retirement, they once went on a picnic to the picturesque Moran Hill together with their children.
While looking round the hill, they happened to see an old couple playing badminton. Many people around got together to look on.
Yun Jong Su and his wife also admired the couple who were playing full of vigour.
Back home, they talked and decided to take up badminton.
After purchasing rackets and shuttlecocks, they began to learn the rudiments of the sport. However, they realized that seeing was definitely different from trying. They tried harder as they met other amateurs to share experiences with them and acquired techniques through games.
They still remember the excitement they felt when they entered the top three rankings for the first time in the amateur division. That feeling was greater than that of winning gold medals later, they say.
Badminton is part and parcel of their daily life.
