Kwon Yong Sim, PhD and associate professor, is a teacher of the plastic surgery department of Clinical Faculty No. 2 of Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences. She has devoted herself to developing the country’s cosmetic surgery.
Influenced by her mother who was a competent surgeon, Kwon hoped to become a doctor and entered Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences in 1988 to major in cosmetic surgery.
After finishing a postgraduate course, she was assigned to the cosmetic surgery department. Since then, she has channeled her energies into research with an ambition to raise the country’s cosmetic surgery onto advanced levels as early as possible.
Over the years, she adopted a soft tissue filler therapy effective for cosmetic surgery.
She went on to put on a scientific basis a micro needling therapy, good for the correction of facial scars and treatment of alopecia, and a facial skin therapy which helps minimize the damage during surgery and shorten the period of treatment.
She also completed a treatment method based on a laser for removing pigments, which can cure the giant blue naevus recognized as incurable, bringing delight to many.
But her success didn’t come easily. She had to overcome numerous failures and spend many years working on a research project. The more achievements, the more congratulations came to her.
But she did not rest on her laurels. A research project had yet to be carried out in the cosmetic surgery sector.
It was the research and development of a 3D skin surface analysis system.
The system, which makes it possible to analyze the skin in a qualitative and quantitative way in line with the world’s standardized norms, was the focus of the medical circles because it scientifically supports all the processes of diagnosis and treatment.
Despite such daunting requirements as development of the drive and program, survey of lots of documents, and rich clinical experience, she made years-long painstaking efforts to complete the system.
She remains faithful to her commitment as a medical worker.
