Kim Chol U, a researcher at the Automation Institute under the State Academy of Sciences, was among the first to receive the Sci-tech Youth Prize at the national exhibition of sci-tech achievements by young people held in August. He was instrumental in establishing an integrated automation system for the crystal thenardite production line.
The prize was recently instituted by the Central Committee of the Socialist Patriotic Youth League to honour the young people who made valuable sci-tech achievements conducive to the country’s economic development and improvement of people’s living standards.
Born into a worker’s family in North Phyongan Province’s Thaechon County, Kim received secondary general education under the benefits of the state and entered Kim Chaek University of Technology, a pedigree farm for training sci-tech talents. Six years ago, he was assigned to the Automation Institute under the State Academy of Sciences after graduating from the university and postgraduate course with flying colours.
While working on a project at a mine, he came to join a research group tasked with the development of an integrated automation system for a crystal thenardite production line based on locally-abundant glauberite.
He had only heard that glauberite contains thenardite, but never seen it before. However, he set out on the project with a driving ambition to develop a Korean-style system that accords with the world standards. Responsible for the automation of the heap-leaching process, one of the pivotal parts of the system, he identified every shortcoming in the past attempts and found solutions one by one while analysing the strengths and weaknesses of the preceding theories and integrated systems. Once he had to reexamine all drawings of the control system, which took him a little more than a year to complete, and restart from programming. After repeated failures, he and his group managed to complete an original integrated system.
His study paper “Technology of separating thenardite from glauberite in a heap-leaching method” was awarded the February 16 Science and Technology Prize, the top honour in the country’s sci-tech sector.
In addition, he has under his belt three national patents including “A dry-wet spinning machine for the production of Lyocell fibre”, as well as dozens of certificates of introduction of sci-tech hits and machine design.
