Diplomatic Row between India and Canada Escalated

The diplomatic rift between India and Canada has come under severe strain over the assassination of an Indian Canadian that happened in Canada in June last year.

Back then, a key figure of a Sikh separatist movement was killed by two gunmen outside a gurdwara in a town of Canada.

After this incident, Canada expelled one diplomat of the Indian Embassy in Canada following its announcement of investigation result that he wire-pulled the assassination as the head of the Canadian branch of Indian external intelligence service. With India’s counteraction, the relations between the two countries were put into a deadlock.

On October 14 th , Canada expelled six diplomats including the Indian Ambassador alleging again that Indian government was behind the stage. India responded by expelling six Canadian diplomats stationed in New Delhi, resolutely rejecting Canada’s claim as “preposterous imputations”.

Meanwhile, US and UK seem to be on Canada’s side.

A spokesperson for the US State Department said that the US wanted to see India to cooperate with Canada in its investigation but India didn’t choose that path.

The British foreign minister mentioned that the UK remained in contact with linked organs in Canada and expressed confidence in its judicial system.

With regard to this, External Affairs Ministry of India released a statement 16 th to reaffirm the government’s stand on the diplomatic row with Canada asserting that the Canadian government didn’t share a shred of evidence with India. It also read that the bilateral relations had come under severe strain and Canada was to blame for it.

Foreign news media commented as follows;

The relations between India and Canada are at the lowest level since the establishment of their diplomatic relations. It is a very hard task for the US to bring the two countries into reconciliation. The US itself is in quite an awkward situation. The diplomatic friction between these countries will be further intensified.
