In Korea embroidery started to develop along with the history of silk because silk cloth is more convenient to be embroidered on than other fabrics produced and used by Koreans in the ancient times (early 30th century BC-early 3rd century BC) and it produces a highly decorative effect.
In those years it was well known both at home and abroad. Nobles of Koguryo (277 BC-AD 668) put on silk clothes not only when they went abroad but also in ordinary days, and they wore embroidered silk clothes at special events.
In the period of Koryo (918-1392), Korean embroidery underwent a new development as its variety grew and the production techniques were at a high level in terms of formative and artistic representation.
This period witnessed independent development of ornamental embroidery for adorning daily necessities beautifully and gorgeously and pictorial embroidery depicting natural landscapes, animals and plants like an artwork.
With a rapid growth of domestic commerce and foreign trade, embroidery works became one of the major commodities of foreign trade.
In the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910), embroidery attained a higher development as stitchwork and production of embroidered goods were popular among ordinary women in urban communities and female peasants.
The traditional Korean embroidery was inscribed on the national intangible cultural heritage list on November 1, 2015.
