Trailblazer in Double Offshore Farming

The Wonsan Seafood Production and Processing Station boasts a rich experience in double offshore farming.

“By double farming we mean raising mussels both in spring and autumn in limited breeding grounds,” said Kim Song Su, manager of the station.

Two years ago while at work at a breeding ground, he found mussels different in size hanging on the frame ropes.

Large mussels were those larvae formed on the frame ropes in the autumn of the previous year. It suddenly struck him that the mussels of that size were big enough to gather in autumn for breeding later.

But until then most people thought that only young mussels gathered in spring could be used for cultivation.

Back at the station, he had a discussion with his employees over his idea.

The notion of double farming in the sea was so foreign to them that none readily supported his idea. Then Kim said: It’s true that we have never experienced this kind of farming. But I think offshore farming is the same as the farming on the land. In order to produce more mussels in the future, we have no other choice but to increase the per-hectare yield, given that we have a limited area of cultivation.

After all, they agreed to do double farming in one hectare of breeding ground on a trial basis.

Some solutions came up among the employees.

One of them was about gathering young mussels in autumn.

They added one seed rope to the frame ropes in the main breeding ground. The method did no harm to the nutritional management of the mussels in the middle of growth and to the flow of water.

The bottleneck was the larval stage of mussels in spring. If they are placed under poor care in this period, the mussels clinging to the seed ropes may grow different in size according to layers, resulting in low yield at the end of the year. On the basis of the past experience, they found a way to reap a sound harvest even at the end of the year. Finally, their painstaking efforts paid off. Last year the station produced 150 tons of mussels in the trial breeding ground.

This year the station set an ambitious goal of producing mussels by nearly five times as against the last year.

To this end it has increased the double farming area by three times, and overfulfilled its production plan in January.

“As a growing number of farmers boast high crop yields, so we are going to follow their example in the sea. No pain, no gain,” said the manager.
