As spring has set in, many people have buckled down to the cultivation of flowering plants. Among them is Kim Sun Hui living in neighbourhood unit No. 3 of Ryomyong-dong in Taesong District, Pyongyang.
Nearing 70 years of age, she grows over a dozen species of ornamental plants in nearly 50 flower pots at home.
Most of them are foliage plants with high ornamental value and air-purification capacity.
According to those living in the same neighbourhood unit, Kim Sun Hui is well known for cultivating many rare flowering plants and an article about her was carried in a newspaper.
Her plants are all fresh and elegant and viewers admire them, saying they look like pictures and artificially made ornaments.
“My mother-in-law began to grow flowers after retirement. She has worked harder since we moved into a new flat on Ryomyong Street which was recently built splendidly,” said Ri Un Gyong.
Kim Sun Hui said she wanted to decorate the cradle of happiness provided by the country with flowers and to grow graceful and beautiful plants to suit the modern dwelling house.
She met horticulturists and flower enthusiasts and read lots of books to expand her horizons. In that course she gained considerable knowledge and experience of flower cultivation and knacks of her own as well.
“Plant growing is so effective for mental stability and physical development and in emotional life. It also has a good effect in making people develop attachment to their families, society and nature,” she said.
Her son and daughter-in-law are also enthusiastic growers of flowering plants and her grandson, a student at a junior middle school, is following suit, she said smilingly, adding:
“People’s interest in flowering plants with high ornamental value and air-purification ability is growing day by day. I’m going to take part in a plant exhibition to be held soon to give people even a bit of pleasure.”
