The Plant Protection Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Science has established a wheat seed sterilizing technique by using microorganisms and introduced it into agricultural practice.
The microorganism-based seed disinfection is a global trend in plant protection as it causes no damage to ecological environment and helps to effectively prevent diseases such as fusarium graminearum and gaeumannomyces graminis , provide good conditions for growth and increase crop yield.
At first the researchers succeeded in separating pure pathogenic bacteria from major strains of wheat seeds and identifying their morphological and cultural characteristics. Then they intensified research to make a seed disinfectant with microorganisms which are highly antagonistic to infectious bacteria in wheat seeds.
In the course of this, they developed the microbial seed disinfectant mixed with antagonistic microbes and a tiny amount of a few chemical bactericides.
This disinfectant is very effective for checking the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria in wheat seeds and improving their germination.
In addition, the microbial metabolism promotes the growth of roots and crops and increases the rate of wintering.
Various farms including the Chilgol Vegetable Farm in Mangyongdae District, Pyongyang, have applied the new disinfectant to their fields, with the result that they have reduced per-hectare seed consumption and increased the crop yield by more than 10 percent.
