Monument to Victorious Battle of Pochonbo

Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- In Hyesan City of Ryanggang Province, the DPRK, there is the monument built in commemoration of the victory of the Pochonbo battle which is of weighty significance in the anti-Japanese national liberation struggle of the Korean people. This monument is an immortal one conveying the exploits of President Kim Il Sung, who dealt a heavy political and military blow to the aggressors and inspired the Korean people with hopes of national liberation by attacking Pochonbo, the strategic vantage point of the Japanese imperialists, on June 4, 1937. It was unveiled on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the historic victory in the Pochonbo battle. The Monument to the Victorious Battle of Pochonbo, with the statue of Kim Il Sung erected in the center of the tower's front, consists of a white granite pedestal, a red marble tower depicting a fluttering flag and subsidiary bronze 60-figure groups in relief on either side of it. The monument is 38.7 meters high and 30.3 meters long on the side. The noble image of the President walking vigorously while looking forward with a pair of binoculars in his one hand and military cap in the other shows his personality as an ever-victorious and iron-willed brilliant commander and outstanding strategist. Seen on either side of the tower are groups of subsidiary theme sculptures "Advance into the Motherland", "Advance" and "Overcoming Hardships". They artistically and vividly show the whole course of the anti-Japanese armed struggle with the main emphasis on the Pochonbo battle and its mass character through the depiction of vivid figures of marked individuality. The tower has been gradually narrowed upward to ensure the sense of stability and balance. From the back to the front, the size of the sculptures is enlarged slightly and the relief is also processed from low to high one, thus emphasizing the process of expanding and developing the anti-Japanese armed struggle and the spirit of mass advance in a formative way. Chairman Kim Jong Il visited the monument and said that it is the first monument on the theme of the revolutionary traditions built in the country. And he said that there is no monument which is excellent in terms of ideology and art like the Monument to the Victorious Battle of Pochonbo.
