Mt Kanbaek Volcano

The Mt Kanbaek Volcano in the north of Kanbaek caldera is 2 162 metres above sea level and is located at the crossing point of a radial fault and a ring-shaped fault along the crestal line of Mt Kanbaek.

It was formed by the accumulation of lava of different kinds of rocks, which came into being by five times of small eruptions, on the trachydacitic layer of the Pukphothaesan Bed.

The slope angles of the cliff inside the caldera are from 75° to 80° and those outside of the caldera are from 20° to 23°.

The volcano is of significance in the study of volcanic activity of Mt Sobaek Volcano Group.

Pegae Peak Volcano

Pegae Peak Volcano is located almost in the middle point between Mt Sobaek and Mt Pukphothae volcanoes on the Mt Paektu Deep Fault Zone in the northwest direction and it is 1 621 metres above sea level.

It consists of three basaltic lava deposits. As the peak is similar to a pillow in shape, it is called Pegae (pillow) Peak.

The middle deposit stretches to the east and the two deposits on both sides to the northeast and southwest respectively.

On the ridge of the mountain, a flat lava plateau lies, surrounded by slopes with gradients of 15-20°. The volcanic body is composed of grey basalt and red or reddish brown porous basalt.

Pegae Peak Volcano is of significance in the study of volcanic landform which was formed by basaltic lava.

Soyonji Peak Scoria Cone

Soyonji Peak Scoria Cone is a parasitic volcano in the shape of a horse’s hoof which was formed by cinder lava which erupted from the edge of the Mt Paektu volcanic body in the third stage of Mt Paektu volcanic eruption.

In general, a parasitic volcano is a small volcano situated on the slope or at the foot of a large volcano.

Soyonji Peak Scoria Cone is a volcanic cone with gentle gradient and has a crater on top.

Soyonji Peak is 10.5 kilometres southeast from the centre of the caldera of Mt Paektu Volcano. It rises 2 114 metres above sea level and its relative height is 133 metres.

The diameter of the crater is 500 metres and that at the foot of the volcano is about 1.2 kilometres.

The scoria cone is of significance in the study of the formation of parasitic volcano and magmatic evolution in the Paektu volcanic zone.

Mudu Peak Scoria Cone

Mudu Peak Scoria Cone is a parasitic volcano of Mt Paektu Volcano. It is 1 930 metres above sea level and its relative height is about 150 metres. The main body consists of reddish brown cinder topped by pumice.

There are volcanic bombs buried under pumice and fumaroles emitting volcanic gas.

Mudu Peak Scoria Cone is a geosite of significance in the study of topographical change after volcanic eruption and explosive eruption of basic magma.
