Situated in the middle of the American continent, Nicaragua covers an area of 130,375㎢ with a population of over 6.8 million.
It was under Spanish colonial rule since 1502 until it gained independence on September 15, 1821. Even after independence, it waged a continuous struggle against the domination and interference of outside forces.
With the victory in the Sandinist people’s revolution on July 19, 1979, the Nicaraguan people put an end to foreign domination and interference and vigorously advanced towards building a new society.
The advent of another anti-imperialist state aspiring after independence in the Western hemisphere was looked on as a thorn in the flesh by the U.S. It clung to barbarous economic blockades while making blatant attempts at military interference against Nicaragua. Nevertheless, the U.S. maneuvers to nip the Nicaraguan revolution in the bud inevitably failed as a result of the death-defying struggle of the Nicaraguan army and people firmly rallied behind the Sandinist national liberation front.
In February, the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), instigated by the U.S. and other Western countries, released a so-called report on human rights violations and crimes against humanity in Nicaragua. The Nicaraguan government dismissed this as a smear campaign and declared withdrawal from the UNHRC.
Nicaragua had formerly demonstrated its resolve to end the restrictions imposed by the imperialists and achieve independent development through its withdrawal from the Organization of American States which had been reduced to a tool for realizing the U.S.’ ambition for domination.
Especially on July 19, a grand event took place to mark the 46 th anniversary of victory in the Sandinist people’s revolution amid active response from the popular masses and ardent support from the world progressive countries. This served as an occasion that demonstrated once again the will of the Nicaraguan government and people to repel foreign interference in their internal affairs and achieve independent development of the country.
What will prevail is the just cause of the Nicaraguan people to safeguard national dignity and achieve independent development.
