Precious historic relics were unearthed and ascertained anew, which show the high patriotism and manners of the Korean people who have worshipped Mt. Paektu as an ancestral mountain.

Those relics discovered in Mt. Paektu and its wide surroundings are tombs belonging to the feudal Joson dynasty. They are an objective and powerful material evidence proving that Korean predecessors buried their ancestral remains there.

Researchers at the Faculty of History of Kim Il Sung University intensified survey and unearthing of the historic relics in the area of Mt. Paektu in hearty response to the intention of the Workers' Party of Korea on unearthing a greater number of excellent cultural heritage of Korea.

In the course, five tombs similar to that of a Korean discovered before on the island at Pond No. 1 of Lake Samji were unearthed on the shore of Lake Chon of Mt. Paektu and four tombs in the Taehongdan County of Ryanggang Province and Musan County of North Hamgyong Province, and their characteristics, origins and years were made clear in a scientific way.

It was clarified that the tombs belong to those between the mid-18th century and the mid-19th century through the radiocarbon dating of those remains jointly conducted with the Novosibirsk State University of Russia. After all, elucidated for the first time was the historical fact that Koreans living in the area of Mt. Paektu including Ryanggang and North Hamgyong provinces had brought the remains of their ancestors to Lake Chon to bury them since the mid-18th century.

The Archaeological Society of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea deliberated and evaluated that the owners of the tombs surveyed and unearthed in the areas of Ryanggang and North Hamgyong provinces including the shore of Lake Chon of Mt. Paektu are Koreans who had carried forward the custom of Palhae in using tombs.

Of late, new tombs have been unearthed in the wake of the discovery of an altar used during the feudal Joson dynasty to make sacrifices to the sky and earth on the shore of Lake Chon of Mt. Paektu and relics related to Taejonggyo buried praying for the appearance of a saint to save the country during the Japanese imperialist colonial rule. As a result, the evident historical fact came to be proved in a scientific way that Korean predecessors climbed up Lake Chon through the virgin forest of tens of kilometres down through generations to bury remains and relics of their ancestors, worshipping Mt. Paektu as an ancestral mountain and regarding it as an inalienable territory of Korea.
