Pyongyang, February 2 (KCNA) — Today is World Wetland Day.
As the DPRK has many rivers, reservoirs, lakes, tidelands, etc., brisk scientific research is underway to conserve wetland and make sustainable use of them.
The Biodiversity Institute under the State Academy of Sciences has intensified the survey and research into the movements of migratory birds in reserves and wetland, given the natural and geographical conditions of the country, located in the centre of the East Asia-Australasian Flyway (EAAF). Wetland is densely located on its east and west coasts and in inland areas.
In recent years, it has conducted an on-site survey in all migratory birds reserves of the country to confirm habitation of such birds and value of protection in 10 odd wetlands and select them as the places suitable for conservation.
It also set the boundaries and functional areas of the reserves in a rational way and solved the scientific and technological problems arising in better protection of migratory birds and their habitats in wetland.
Every January and February, it conducts a regular survey to contribute to the global water bird survey.
The DPRK signed the Ramsar Convention in May 2018.
