From olden times the Korean ancestors practised martial arts and cultivated the spirit of attaching importance to military affairs.
Archery was counted top among their martial arts.
People began to train archery from their childhood in the period of Koguryo, the first feudal state of Korea that existed between 277 BC and AD 668. They often competed in shooting arrows on horseback to hunt animals or hitting the targets hanging on posts.
Archery was greatly encouraged also in the period of Koryo, a feudal state of Korea which existed from 918 to 1392, and this tradition was carried on in the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910), the last feudal state of Korea.
After Korea’s liberation on August 15, 1945, Korean people used to hold an archery contest along with other sporting events at the end of the farming season in spring.
Archery was played by deciding the rankings according to the scores of hitting a fixed target in a place or while in moving. This gradually developed into one of the traditional sporting events.
Archery events include target archery, indoor archery, field archery, flag archery and distant archery.
Today people enjoy the sport at archery grounds in different parts of the country including the Meari Shooting Gallery, in the course of which they learn various skills of archery.
Archery is one of the national intangible cultural heritage items.
