June 5 marks World Environment Day.
World Environment Day, an annual event observed by over 150 countries with the United Nations Environment Programme at the helm, has become a vital platform for promoting progress in the environmental sector. Plastic pollution has been highlighted as a major environmental concern during the observances.
Today exponentially increasing plastic pollution poses grave risks to human health and ecosystems of the earth. Single-use plastics, in particular, have been identified as a significant contributor to waste generation worldwide.
According to information available, if things go unchecked, plastic products will have considerably boosted by 2060, three times as many as what is available at present, causing marine pollution, harming human health and accelerating climate change.
For this reason, World Environment Day campaigns in recent years have focused on raising awareness about plastic consumption, waste management practices, and the need for sustainable alternatives.
Reducing plastic pollution requires coordinated efforts involving policy measures, corporate responsibility, and behavioural change.
Accordingly, the DPRK has stepped up efforts to prevent plastic pollution.
Measures have been taken to ensure that institutions, enterprises and residents have a stake in the procurement of plastic waste and voluntarily take part in the work. A nationwide recycling system has been put in place and upgraded on a constant basis.
An increasing number of units are adopting advanced business and management approaches in favour of recycling, while readjusting and reinforcing production lines and foundations and constantly updating technology to this end.
The Hamhung Disabled Soldiers’ Essential Plastic Goods Factory and many other factories have been reusing plastic waste to turn out fibres and consumer goods, which are favoured by customers for their good quality.
Recycling efforts are gaining momentum amid the drive to protect natural environment and transform the national economy into a resource-saving and circular economy model so as to create more material wealth.
