On June 10 1987, the south Korean people, who were enraged by the Chun Doo Hwan military fascist dictatorship, turned out for a massive resistance to protest against Chun’s nomination of Roh Tae Woo as the presidential candidate.
Several millions of demonstrators demanded the repeal of the April 13 measures, a constitutional revision for a direct election, overthrow of dictatorship and a democratic constitution, and the resistance swept throughout south Korea.
Though the Chun Doo Hwan junta made desperate attempts to clamp down on the resistance using 351 000 tear gas bombs, which are much more than those spent the year before, in a matter of 17 days, the locals fought undauntedly to the last.
Chun Doo Hwan and Roh Tae Woo issued a “special declaration” and “special statement” to pledge themselves to constitutional amendment for a direct election and the release of detainees, kneeling down to the demonstrators.
The historic significance and serious lesson of the June popular resistance still teach precious truth, given the conservatives who received the political baton from Chun Doo Hwan and Roh Tae Woo are desperately dampening the desire of the locals aspiring after independence, democracy and reunification.
Now that the local administrative elections are near at hand, the Liberty Korea Party and other conservative groups are particularly acting foolishly to check the trend toward improved relationship between the north and south as they desperately clamour for “security” and “judgment of power”.
It is the truth taught by history that if the conservatives gain power, the people’s aspirations for independence, democracy and reunification will never be fulfilled.
