Risky military moves

The north and south of Korea decided in the historic September Pyongyang Joint Declaration to lead the termination of military hostility in the areas of confrontation including the Demilitarized Zone to the substantial removal of the danger of war and fundamental eradication of hostility in the whole Korean peninsula. Later, they held military talks and agreed to take practical measures to this end.

However, signs something unusual appear in south Korea these days, giving rise to serious concern.

On November 27, the south Korean military decided at the 116th meeting of the committee for promoting defence affairs to ship in the Korean peninsula foreign military hardware on a large scale.

According to open data, it will purchase ballistic missile early-warning radar Green Pine-C worth US$ 300 million from Israel, latest anti-submarine aircraft P-8A Poseidon developed by the Boeing and ground-to-air guided interceptor missile PAC-3MSE from the US and much other military equipment, as well as latest fighter-bombers and submarines.

The south Korean air force waged a combined drill for the maintenance of combat preparedness for five days from December 3. CBS, KBS and other media outlets of south Korea reported that the drill involved the main fighters of the air force including F-15K and KF-16 fighter jets from ten combat flying corps.

Earlier, the military simultaneously staged the north-targeted Thaeguk and Hoguk exercises between late October and early November.

The south Korean authorities’ military buildup going against the measures for building military confidence between the north and south and the current atmosphere of inter-Korean reconciliation is a challenge to all the fellow countrymen and the international community aspiring after peace and reunification of the peninsula.

If such military buildup and military exercises are tolerated, they will inevitably bring about serious consequences to ensuring peace and security in the peninsula and Northeast Asia.
