Our school, established in September 1953 is associated with the immortal exploits of Chairman Kim Jong Il.

On May 13, 1961, he visited the then Ryongnam Middle School located at the foot of picturesque Ryongnam Hill.

Looking round the school, he said in the following vein: It is necessary to encourage students to take physical exercises and frequently organize sports games and mountaineering for them. Students should keep themselves neat and clean and observe the proprieties. Bringing up what kind of talents will be decided according to how to educate students during their middle school days. The students have an outlook on the world, cherish hope and ambition and reveal their ardent desire and enthusiasm in that period. Therefore, teachers should raise their qualifications to train them well.

During his second visit to our school on April 5, 1962, he underlined the need for students to build up their bodies so as to study harder and do any things well, wishing they would grow up into excellent pillars of the country in the future.

Later, he made sure that over 250 teaching aids and furnishings of 58 kinds, including specimens of animals and plants and musical instruments were sent to our school on several occasions.

Thanks to the warm care of the Chairman who paid close attention to the education of the rising generation, our school has made many achievements.

Our school is now provided with all conditions for education, including multifunctional classrooms, several labs, a library and an outdoor swimming pool. We are training students into competent personnel who are knowledgeable, morally sound and physically strong, by positively developing new teaching methods.

We are running groups for football, table tennis, fine arts and others. Our students have won gold medals in succession at the national football tournament of middle school students. They have also proved successful on several occasions at juvenile wrestling, track-and-field events, and rhythmic gymnastics contests, students’ art and pencil-drawing festivals and fine art exhibitions.

Our school has produced many DPRK Heroes, Labour Heroes, People’s Athletes, People’s Artistes, professors and doctors.

In order to hand down forever the love and benevolence of Kim Jong Il who took parental care of our students to bring them up into the pillars who would shoulder the future of prosperous Korea, the State ensured that our school was renamed May 13 Ryongnam Senior Middle School.

Every year our school celebrates this day significantly.
